MOTHICA CLOSE ENOUGH

Brooklyn’s dark-pop enigma Mothica (aka McKenzie Ellis) stunned earlier this year with her Heavy Heart EP; tracks that explore the young artist’s relationships with others and the wider world. It’s quietly powerful and shows Mothica as an increasingly sophisticated songwriter. Now, the New York talent has done what many musicians would be afraid to do, and that’s share all the unfinished demos from the EP’s creative process. The collection is titled nostalgia and is incredibly endearing with its rawness, full of promise, but left in the back pages. Your favourite may be the computer game samples-meets-acoustic guitar song ‘Strapped Down’ or the pop-leaning ‘Not Like The Summer’ or the self-produced ‘Carry Me Home’, but for us it’s ‘Close Enough’. It has the sense of a song that so nearly made it onto the EP, with it’s alt-pop melody, femme fatale lyrics and echoed sighs and unpolished rhythms. It’s every bit signature Mothica and we’re so happy that she took the leap to share this with the online music community. - HT
